A truly verdant island surrounded by the emerald waters of the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is the island of mystery and strange phenomena. Here the sea water disappears from Argostoli, the island's capital, the so-called sinks, and ends at atmospheric cave Melissani where the water of the lake creates turquoise reflections in the walls of the cave. Several earthquakes hit the area every year. In 1953 a terrible earthquake almost destroyed the island, leaving "upright" only the northernmost part of the island, the peninsula of Erissos, where the traditional village of Fiscardo.
